Happy Friday. This is TheStreet’s Stock Market Today for Sept. 5, 2025. You can follow the latest updates on the market here with our daily live blog.

Update: 7:12 a.m. ET

Why So Much is Riding on Today’s Payrolls Report

At the Fed Symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyo. just a few weeks ago, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell teased an adjustment in Fed policy. However, true to form, the Fed waits for data.

For that reason, the August Payrolls turned into the Super Bowl of economic data. Coming just days before the Fed’s September FOMC meeting, the results could augur clues of how the Fed could vote at the forthcoming meeting.

If the results are too good, it increases the chances that the Fed will keep rates the same, focusing on the inflation part of the dual mandate. If the results are tepid, it’s likely that the Fed will act.

If some of the recent reports are any indication, the latter is shaping up to be more likely. A grave irony: bad news is actually good news on Wall Street.

Economic Data: Payrolls, Unemployment Rate, Average Earnings

Today is the day that investors have been waiting all week for (and arguably, even longer.) In a few hours, we’ll get the August Payrolls report, plus July revisions.

Most of these big reports are coming out at 8:30 a.m. ET, which means most of the fireworks will be coming just before the market opens. The results will likely decide the trajectory of the market today.

Here are today’s big economic data readouts to watch:
