Care home company Vivere has acquired a former private school building and surrounding land in Edinburgh.

Vivere will invest £25 million to refurbish Lansdowne House, part of St George’s School in Ravelston since 1976.

Set in 2.2 acres, the building in Coltbridge Terrace was originally known as Coltbridge Hall, built in 1875 and owned by a number of notable figures in Edinburgh society and business prior to it being converted into Lansdowne House School in 1945.

The sale was handled by Savills. Details of the transaction were not disclosed. Scottish architectural practice CDA Edinburgh has been appointed to transform the house and grounds into a new care community.

Historic features in the building will be restored while modern buildings will be replaced and the grounds enhanced with landscaped gardens.

School head Carol Chandler-Thompson said: “After a thorough and carefully considered process, we are confident we have selected the right buyer who will be respectful of the site during the development phase, and a good neighbour to the school and the local community in the years ahead.”

She added: “St George’s has a proud and pioneering heritage in Edinburgh, and an exciting future ahead. The proceeds from this sale enable us to invest further in our 15-acre, single-site parkland campus in Ravelston.”

Vivere is holding an information event at Lansdowne House on 2 October (4pm to 6pm) where visitors can learn more about its plans.
