New research has revealed that Birmingham is officially Britain’s “luckiest” postcode when it comes to the People’s Postcode Lottery, having scooped more wins than any other area in the country.
Figures show that the Birmingham postcode area (B) has topped the charts, coming out ahead of major cities such as Sheffield, Manchester, Newcastle, and Nottingham.

How the Postcode Lottery works
Unlike traditional lotteries, where players pick a set of numbers, the People’s Postcode Lottery operates in a slightly different way. Participants sign up using their home postcode and pay a monthly subscription to be entered into the draws. Prizes are then awarded daily, weekly, and monthly, with everyone playing in the winning postcode sharing a portion of the prize fund.
Another concept where players don’t specifically choose traditional numbers on a lottery slip has also developed in recent years is lottery betting, which allows users to stake on the outcomes of draws in a different way.
Since its launch, the Postcode Lottery has grown into one of the UK’s most popular subscription lotteries, with millions of players across the country taking part. Alongside cash prizes, the lottery also raises significant funds for charities and community projects, with more than £1 billion donated to good causes in sectors like arts and leisure since its inception.
Birmingham leads the way
BoyleSports analysed Postcode Lottery draws dating back to 6 January 2011 to find out which areas of Great Britain have enjoyed the most success.
Out of the 121 postcode regions in the UK, five areas consistently stood out as having been drawn more frequently than others.
Birmingham leads the way with an impressive 1,464 wins to date.
Sheffield came in second with 1,383 wins, followed by Manchester (1,226 wins), Newcastle upon Tyne (1,119 wins), and Nottingham (1,088 wins).
These five postcodes have all managed to secure a steady presence in Postcode Lottery draws, with Birmingham comfortably ahead of the rest.
Top five most drawn postcodes:
- B (Birmingham) – 1,464 wins
- S (Sheffield) – 1,383 wins
- M (Manchester) – 1,226 wins
- NE (Newcastle upon Tyne) – 1,119 wins
- NG (Nottingham) – 1,088 wins
Not every postcode is equal
While some areas appear to have enjoyed more than their fair share of luck, others have seen very few wins over the years. The study highlighted that certain regions – particularly in central London and remote parts of the UK – have recorded only a handful of appearances.
The WC (West Central London) postcode has recorded the fewest overall wins with just 10 draws, while EC (East Central London) has had only 21 wins. Remote regions such as the HS (Outer Hebrides), LD (Llandrindod Wells), and KW (Kirkwall) also featured among the least successful postcodes, with fewer than 65 wins each.
Five postcodes with the fewest wins:
- WC (West Central London) – 10 wins
- EC (East Central London) – 21 wins
- HS (Outer Hebrides) – 45 wins
- LD (Llandrindod Wells) – 58 wins
- KW (Kirkwall) – 61 wins
Why do some areas come up more often?
The results may seem to suggest that certain areas are “luckier” than others, but the Postcode Lottery is a game of chance. Each draw is randomised and independent, meaning that no past result has any influence on future outcomes.
A spokesperson from BoyleSports commented: “It’s important to remember that while some postcodes have appeared more often in past draws, this has no bearing on future results. Every Postcode Lottery draw is entirely independent, with randomised processes ensuring that no previous outcome can influence the next.
“If you’re curious about trends, this list certainly highlights some of the postcodes that have enjoyed the most success so far.”
The disparity in results may also be partly explained by population density. Larger postcodes that cover major cities, such as Birmingham, Manchester, and Sheffield, naturally include more households and more players. With a higher concentration of entries, it follows that these regions are statistically more likely to appear than rural areas with fewer participants.
A snapshot of Britain’s postcode fortune
The findings highlight a fascinating snapshot of how fortune has been distributed across the country over more than a decade of draws. While Birmingham holds the crown as Britain’s “luckiest” postcode, smaller regions like central London and the Scottish islands have yet to see the same level of success.
For players, the message remains clear: no matter where you live, every draw is a fresh chance. The postcode you play with might not have come up often in the past – but the next win could be just around the corner.
