Juggling act: Gregor Townsend

Scotland rugby head coach Gregor Townsend has been appointed as a part-time “strategic advisor” to Red Bull.

In a move that will raise eyebrows, the 52-year-old will juggle the new role with his duties in charge of the national team, having recently signed a new contract until the 2027 World Cup.

Strategy and philosophy are reportedly what Townsend will be focusing on during his 30 days a year contract – believed to have been agreed at the time of his extension – as part of Red Bull’s global rugby plan.

Confirming the head coach has the backing of his Scottish Rugby bosses, a spokesperson said: “Red Bull have appointed Gregor Townsend as strategic advisor and consultant on their global rugby strategy with Scottish Rugby’s full knowledge and support.

“This is a great opportunity for Gregor with one of the biggest sporting organisations in the world. He will be participating in high-level strategic conversations with a powerhouse in sport and we see that as being beneficial to Scottish Rugby going forward.

“Gregor remains fully committed to his role as Scotland head coach and we see this new role working alongside that well.”

The news has emerged in the wake of reports that Newcastle have sacked director of rugby Steve Diamond just one week into the Premiership season.

Meanwhile, former Scotland captain Jonny Petrie is to join Newcastle as managing director next week.

The former managing director at Edinburgh Rugby left Ulster last summer after five years at the helm.

Joining him at Kingston Park is John Fletcher, Scottish Rugby’s current head of pathways. He takes on the role of  Newcastle’s academy and pathways director from 1 December.
