Russell Martin has become the shortest-serving manager in Rangers’ history following his sacking after just 123 days in charge.

The former Southampton boss takes the unwanted title from Pedro Caixinha, the 1-1 draw at Falkirk finally forcing the board to act after a dreadful start to the season which sees Rangers languishing in eighth place in the Premiership, 11 points behind leaders Hearts and nine adrift of Celtic.

Former manager Steven Gerrard, who won the league title in 2021, is being widely tipped for a sensational return.

The writing had been on the wall for Martin for a number of weeks, with supporters growing increasingly disillusioned by what they were seeing on the park.

Their ire reached a new high after the Falkirk clash, with Martin requiring a police escort to his car after being forced to leave the stadium by a side door to avoid the furious fans who had gathered outside.

Martin’s assistant Matt Gill and first team coach Mike Williamson have also left the club after overseeing Rangers’ worst start to a campaign in nearly 50 years.

A statement from Ibrox said: “While all transition periods require some time, results have not met the club’s expectations.

“Assistant head coach Matt Gill and first team coach Mike Williamson will also be departing.

“Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future.”

With the upcoming international break, Rangers are not back in action until 18 October when they take on Dundee United and chairman Andrew Cavanagh and the club’s new American owners, 49ers Enterprises, are under enormous pressure to get the right person in the dug out this time.
