John Swinney will today publish his policy proposals for an independent Scotland which are expected to detail how splitting from the UK would enable the country to “thrive and grow”.
The First Minister has promised that the proposals will set out “how” an independent Scotland can tackle current challenges and build prosperity.
A Fresh Start with Independence will be seen as a crucial part of the SNP’s armoury going into next year’s elections which nationalists regard as a quasi-referendum on the constitution.
The proposals will put the country’s natural resources and energy assets at the heart of its economic case, along with the strength of its academic institutions and the emergence of a technology base.
Yesterday he highlighted these features at a gathering of international investors in Edinburgh. He invited them to be part of Scotland’s journey “toward a thriving, sustainable economy built on innovation, resilience, and inclusive growth”.
Today, in a briefing ahead of the independence proposals, he said: “We need to be able to utilise the immense resources of our country for the benefit of all our people.
“Those possibilities are only available to Scotland with the fresh start of independence. Scotland has so many strengths and so much potential: our people, our land, our natural resources, our key sectors, our institutions, our ingenuity, and our cultural assets.
“But our ability to improve the standard of living of people in Scotland is constrained by the UK, its poor economic performance and its long standing, deep inequalities.
“Scotland needs to be able to improve the opportunities available to our people, our communities, and our businesses. Scotland needs to build a stronger, more inclusive economy that works for all.
“Publishing ‘A Fresh Start with Independence’ will set out how, by becoming an independent country, we can tackle the current challenges and create a Scotland with a prosperous economy and just society.”
