Head coach Gregor Townsend is set to extend his time in charge of Scotland with a new deal which will see him lead the team into the 2027 World Cup in Australia.
The 52-year-old’s current deal was due to run out in seven months’ time, with recent speculation suggesting he was being lined up by Newcastle Red Bulls to become their director of rugby.
Scottish Rugby is understood to have killed off any chance of such a move with the contract extension.
Scotland’s longest-serving coach in the professional era, Townsend has been in charge for 94 Tests since making his debut as head coach in 2017 and is set to chalk up his century against England at Murrayfield in February’s Six Nations clash.
With his future secure, he will be keen to mount a serious challenge for the Six Nations having mustered just two third-place finishes in eight attempts.
Improving the country’s World Cup fortunes will also be on his wish list, Scotland having failed to emerge from the pool stages in 2019 in Japan and two years ago in France.
The Scots currently sit eighth in the world rankings, having reached a record high of No. 5 under Townsend.
