Businesses and commuters face more months of traffic delays as the first phase of roadworks on the M8 west of Glasgow begins on Monday (8 Sept).

Motorists have been urged to allow time for diversions and speed limits during the £9 million refurbishment of four bridges around the Hillington Interchange at Junction 26.

The repairs to the Hillington bridges, dating back to 1968, the main carriageway and sliproads will continue until next May with a contraflow system and two eastbound lanes close. The eastbound on-slip road will also be closed during the first phase.

A 40mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the project and a number of diversions have been announced.

Amey, which is carrying out the work, said drivers should allow extra time for their journeys.

It is the latest set of works to be inflicted on the M8. Last month, it was confirmed that the repairs to the Glasgow Woodside viaduct, near Charing Cross, which have already been running for four years, have been extended for two years and will not be completed until 2027.

Transport Scotland said restrictions on the eastbound carriageway are due to be lifted in autumn 2026 and on the westbound carriageway in the the second half of 2027.

Resurfacing work around Charing Cross has also led to overnight closures being announced for September.
