Kevin Muscat has agreed to become the next head coach at Rangers following intense negotiations.

The former Rangers player and Australia international, will not take over at Ibrox until next month as he will want to clinch the Chinese Super League title with his current team, Shanghai Port.

Rangers now have to conclude a compensation package for the 52-year-old who is expected to be accompanied by his coaches Ross Aloisi and Vince Lerardo.

The move for Muscat followed former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl’s decision to withdraw his interest in the role.

Vince Lerardo will be among Muscat’s assistants

Muscat replaces Russell Martin whose short tenure was brought to an abrupt end before the international break.

Muscat has won leagues in his homeland, Japan and in China. He spent the 2002-03 season as a player at Rangers under Alex McLeish. He was in the running for the Rangers job before the club opted for Philippe Clement.

Rangers under-19 coach Steven Smith has been put in charge for the weekend Premiership clash with Dundee United.

Fans will be curious to know if Muscat will bring any members of his Shanghai team to Glasgow, given their supremacy in the Chinese league.
