Rangers have suffered a fresh humiliation after Kevin Muscat pulled the plug on a move to Ibrox as head coach.

The former Ibrox defender will remain in China and see out the rest of his contract with Shanghai Port who are poised to win the country’s league title.

Muscat last week indicated he was ready to sign a multi-year deal with Rangers, though his arrival in Glasgow would have to await the completion of the Chinese league on 22 November.

It now appears this was a deal-breaker and the Rangers board will turn their attention to other candidates.

Bookmakers have installed former Manchester United player and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a contender to replace Russell Martin who was fired after just 123 days.

Solskjaer, 52, was fired from Turkish club Besiktas in August. His former United team-mate, ex-Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick, has also been linked to the Rangers vacancy.

Former Burnley and Everton coach Sean Dyche, another listed among potential recruits, is likely to replace Ange Postecoglou at Nottingham Forest after the ex-Celts boss became the English Premier League’s shortest serving manager.

Rangers fans, already furious over the decisions being taken under the new board, will turn the heat up on chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell.

Number one choice Steven Gerrard was not prepared to work under the club’s structure.

Rangers’ worst start to a season for many years continued on Saturday when they rescued a point in a home match against Dundee United. They are sixth in the Premiership with only one win from eight games, 13 points behind the leaders Hearts.
