Discount department store chain closes metro area locations

As the holiday season approaches, shoppers are getting their bank accounts and credit cards ready to begin their annual gift shopping sprees at either brick-and-mortar shopping malls or online retailers.

Most retailers at local shopping centers and malls have been ready for the post-Halloween holiday shopping season to begin since September, while shoppers with a keen eye could spot some Christmas-themed merchandise and decorations at stores in August.

As consumers get ready for their shopping to begin, some national retailers are restructuring their retail footprints with plans to open new stores before the holiday rush, but at the same time making plans to eliminate stores that no longer make economic sense to continue operating.

Nordstrom closes two stores

Upscale department store chain Nordstrom didn’t wait until after the holiday season to close a couple of its stores, as it shut down its Santa Monica, Calif., store at the Third Street Promenade shopping district on Aug. 26 and its St. Louis store in the Galleria Mall on Aug. 24, 2025.

Global off-price retail chain operator TJX Companies’ strategy is different, as it will use the holiday shopping season to move inventory before shutting down some of its stores.

Marshalls is closing two stores in prime locations in Los Angeles and San Jose, Calif.

Marshalls closes Los Angeles, San Jose stores

The discount department stores owner has scheduled the closing of two Marshalls stores located in Los Angeles and San Jose, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notices filed by the company.

Marshalls of CA LLC filed a WARN notice on Oct. 17, 2025, to inform 62 employees at its 7013 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, location that it would permanently close that store on Jan. 5, 2026, according to a California Employment Development Department WARN Report Summary.

Marshalls has prime store locations

The Hollywood Boulevard Marshalls is located on a prime piece of property, a block east of Madame Tussauds Hollywood wax museum and the legendary TCL Chinese Theater that features historic footprints in cement of Hollywood stars.

The discount department store chain also filed a WARN notice on the same day, informing 64 employees at its 5160 Stevens Creek Blvd., San Jose, Marshalls location that it would permanently close the store as well on Jan. 5, 2026.

The San Jose Marshalls is located along the city’s main retail boulevard in the Stevens Creek Central shopping center, which is just down the street from Auto Row and the upscale shopping and dining district Santana Row.

The discount department store also is not far from San Jose’s historic landmark, Winchester Mystery House, a Victorian mansion built and expanded from 1886 to 1922 by Sarah Winchester, the wife William Winchester, who was the heir to Winchester Repeating Arms Company founder Oliver Winchester.

“We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies,” a spokesperson told the Silicon Valley Business Journal.
